Fire Prevention
Inside the Home:
- Smoke Alarms & Detectors
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and on every level of your home.
- Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
- Electrical Safety
- Do not overload circuits or power strips.
- Replace frayed wires and damaged cords.
- Hire a professional for electrical work instead of DIY fixes.
- Kitchen Safety
- Never leave cooking unattended.
- Keep flammable items (towels, paper towels) away from heat sources.
- Clean grease buildup from stovetops and range hoods.
- Heating Safety
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable materials.
- Regularly clean chimneys and fireplaces.
- Never leave candles burning unattended.
- Fire Extinguishers
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, garage, and near fireplaces.
- Learn how to use them properly.
Outside the Home:
- Create Defensible Space
- Maintain at least 30 feet of clear space around your home.
- Remove dead plants, dry leaves, and other flammable materials.
- Keep grass trimmed and use fire-resistant plants in landscaping.
- Roof & Gutters
- Regularly clean leaves and debris from gutters and roofs.
- Use fire-resistant roofing materials.
- Proper Storage
- Store firewood, propane tanks, and other combustibles away from your home.
- Keep gas cans and chemicals in well-ventilated, secure areas.
- Fire-Resistant Building Materials
- Use non-combustible siding, tempered glass windows, and fire-rated doors.
- Escape Plan & Safety Drills
- Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
- Ensure everyone knows two exits from each room and a meeting place outside.
