Fire Prevention

Inside the Home:

  1. Smoke Alarms & Detectors
    • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and on every level of your home.
    • Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
  2. Electrical Safety
    • Do not overload circuits or power strips.
    • Replace frayed wires and damaged cords.
    • Hire a professional for electrical work instead of DIY fixes.
  3. Kitchen Safety
    • Never leave cooking unattended.
    • Keep flammable items (towels, paper towels) away from heat sources.
    • Clean grease buildup from stovetops and range hoods.
  4. Heating Safety
    • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable materials.
    • Regularly clean chimneys and fireplaces.
    • Never leave candles burning unattended.
  5. Fire Extinguishers
    • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, garage, and near fireplaces.
    • Learn how to use them properly.

Outside the Home:

  1. Create Defensible Space
    • Maintain at least 30 feet of clear space around your home.
    • Remove dead plants, dry leaves, and other flammable materials.
    • Keep grass trimmed and use fire-resistant plants in landscaping.
  2. Roof & Gutters
    • Regularly clean leaves and debris from gutters and roofs.
    • Use fire-resistant roofing materials.
  3. Proper Storage
    • Store firewood, propane tanks, and other combustibles away from your home.
    • Keep gas cans and chemicals in well-ventilated, secure areas.
  4. Fire-Resistant Building Materials
    • Use non-combustible siding, tempered glass windows, and fire-rated doors.
  5. Escape Plan & Safety Drills
  • Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
  • Ensure everyone knows two exits from each room and a meeting place outside.
